To All Members of the Soo Pee Wee Hockey League,
It is with great concern that I address the recent rise in issues related to player safety, parent behavior, coach conduct, and overall sportsmanship within the SPWHL. Unfortunately, these challenges are not unique to our league but are becoming increasingly prevalent in arenas across the country and beyond. Given the volume of concerns we have received over the past few weeks, I urge all members to read this message carefully, as it contains important information about how the remainder of the season will be managed.
Commitment to Player and Official Safety
The SPWHL maintains a zero-tolerance
policy regarding inappropriate behavior on and off the ice. Player
safety remains our highest priority, and we are committed to taking all
necessary measures to ensure a respectful and secure environment for players,
coaches, officials, and spectators alike.
Our on-ice and off-ice officials are
essential to the operation of our league, and we stand firmly in support of
their efforts. Without them, our games simply would not be possible.
Player Conduct and Safety on the Ice
In addition to ensuring a safe environment off the ice, we
must also address player conduct during games. Dangerous and reckless play has
no place in our league, and we expect all players to compete with respect for
their opponents and the integrity of the game. Hits from behind, head contact,
and other dangerous plays will not be tolerated. Officials will be strictly
enforcing penalties for unsafe actions, and repeat offenders will face further
disciplinary action. We urge all coaches and parents to reinforce the
importance of safe play, good sportsmanship, and respect for the rules at all
times.
Respect for Officials
A concerning trend we have observed is the increasing level
of abuse and inappropriate comments directed at officials. This behavior is
unacceptable. We extend our sincere gratitude to all referees, particularly
those wearing green armbands, who are stepping up to officiate games.
No official—especially younger ones—should have to endure
verbal abuse from the stands or, worse, confrontations on the ice. Officiating
is a learning experience, just like playing the game. We ask that all parents,
coaches, and spectators respect the
decisions made on the ice and refrain from engaging in negative
behavior.
Zero-Tolerance
Policy for Abuse of Officials
Effective immediately, the league is implementing stricter enforcement of our zero-tolerance policy regarding
abuse and unsportsmanlike conduct toward officials. Any reports of such
behavior will result in suspensions not only for players and coaches but also
for parents.
Missed calls are part of the game—just as missed shots and
errant passes are. Hockey is a learning process for everyone involved, and we must
foster an environment that allows players and officials alike to develop their
skills.
Final Acknowledgment
We deeply appreciate the time and dedication of all
volunteers who contribute to the success of our teams. The league would not
function without your ongoing commitment, and we are grateful for your efforts
in helping our children enjoy the sport we all love.
If you need to submit a complaint, please use the official complaint form available on
our website. Complaints submitted via
email without this form will not be addressed.
Thank you for your attention and cooperation. Let’s work
together to uphold the integrity and positive spirit of the game.
Sincerely,
Cole Clouthier
SPWHL Vice President
