1. What is the purpose of this MOU?

This MOU outlines the transition of administrative and managerial responsibilities for U15 and U18 house league and "A" carded teams from SMHA to SPWHL. The goal is to streamline operations, improve efficiency, and enhance grassroots hockey development in Sault Ste. Marie.

2. When will the transition take effect?

The transition is planned to begin as early as the 2025-2026 season and must be completed no later than the 2026-2027 season.

3. Which teams are affected by this transition?

The U15 and U18 house league teams, as well as "A" carded teams, will move from SMHA to SPWHL.

4. What will SPWHL provide under its management?

SPWHL will be responsible for:

  • Team sponsorships
  • Jerseys and socks
  • A game and practice schedule (30 games and 10 practices for 2025-2026)
  • Registration fee determination
  • Coaching staff and player protections
  • Tournament participation requirements

5. How much will registration cost?

For the 2025-2026 season, the projected costs are:

  • Registration Fee: $925 (subject to increases based on Hockey Canada fees and ice rental costs)
  • "A" Tryout Fee: $50
  • Maximum Team Fees: $750 per player (to cover any additional expenses)

6. What tournaments are mandatory for teams?

Teams must participate in the annual SPWHL Tournament and the Ken Closs Christmas Jamboree.

7. How will the transition process be managed?

Key steps include:

  • Governance approvals from SPWHL, SMHA, NOHA, and OHF
  • Stakeholder engagement (referees, timekeepers, ice managers, etc.)
  • Operational adjustments (league convenors, board role changes)
