RESPECT YOUR REFEREE!
Let’s take a moment to recognize and express our sincere gratitude to the referees within our association.
Their dedication to the game is truly commendable. Referees spend countless hours on the ice in a role that is often underappreciated and heavily scrutinized. They are required to make split-second decisions in fast-paced, high-pressure situations — a responsibility that demands focus, integrity, and resilience.
Recently, referees have been the subject of significant discussion in both traditional media and on social media. The SPWHL stands united in support of our officials. They are an essential part of our game, and their commitment ensures that our athletes can safely and fairly enjoy the sport they love.
As members of the SPWHL community, we are all bound by our Code of Conduct. Players, coaches, parents, and spectators share a responsibility to demonstrate respect, sportsmanship, and self-control at all times. Disagreement with a call does not justify inappropriate behaviour. We expect everyone in our arenas to model the values we want our athletes to learn — respect for the game, respect for each other, and respect for the officials.
Without the hard work and dedication of our referees, our children would not have the opportunity to compete and grow through hockey. We encourage our community to show appreciation — whether at the rink or around town — and to thank our referees for everything they do for our players and our league.
